Overview
Daxter kicks off in the immediate aftermath of Jak’s capture by the Krimzon Guard. With his hero imprisoned, Daxter, ever the resourceful (and self-serving) sidekick, finds himself alone in the sprawling, unfamiliar Haven City. His quest to rescue Jak isn’t immediate, however. To make ends meet and, perhaps, to avoid starvation, Daxter takes on a job as a pest exterminator for a kindly old man named Osmo. This seemingly mundane occupation becomes the vehicle for his grand adventure, as he navigates Haven City’s diverse districts, from bustling urban areas to perilous, bug-infested locales, all while searching for clues to Jak’s whereabouts.
Gameplay in Daxter cleverly adapts the series’ action-platforming formula to suit its smaller, furrier protagonist. Daxter’s agility is paramount; he can double jump, cling to ledges, and squeeze through narrow passages, utilizing his diminutive size to his advantage. Combat primarily involves a trusty bug-swatter and later, an upgraded spray gun that can stun enemies with green eco-based bug spray. This weapon evolves throughout the game, eventually granting Daxter a jetpack for limited flight and even a flamethrower. The game also incorporates a pseudo open-world hub in Haven City, allowing Daxter to access various mission locations and occasionally pilot vehicles in exhilarating on-rails segments. A unique touch are the “dream sequences,” rhythm-based mini-games where Daxter imagines himself in parody versions of popular movies, offering amusing diversions and unlockable special moves.
