It is the fourth film in the Star Wars film series, the first film of the prequel trilogy and the first chronological chapter of the “Skywalker Saga”. The film was released 16 years after the previous Star Wars film, Return of the Jedi (1983), and was a major commercial success.
The film follows the Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they are tasked with protecting Queen Amidala of Naboo from a trade blockade by the Trade Federation. Their mission takes them to the desert planet Tatooine, where they meet a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker who is strong in the Force. They believe he is the “Chosen One” who was prophesied to bring balance to the Force.
Qui-Gon convinces the Jedi Council to train Anakin, and they take him with them back to Naboo to help them defeat the Trade Federation and liberate the planet. The film also introduces the Sith Lord Darth Maul, a deadly warrior who serves the dark side of the Force.
