The games take place in various time periods and locations throughout history, and each one features a different main character in the role of protagonist. Shao Jun, a female assassin living in China during the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century, is the protagonist of China. She is on a mission of vengeance against the Templars who were responsible for the death of her mentor. Arbaaz Mir, a descendant of the assassin Altar Ibn-La’Ahad, is the protagonist of India, which takes place in India during the 19th century and takes place during the Anglo-Sikh Wars. The story of Nikolai Orelov, a former Assassin who is attempting to prevent the Templars from obtaining a powerful artefact and who takes place in Russia in 1918 during the Russian Revolution, is told in the game Russia.
The gameplay is very similar in both of these games; the player controls their character as they progress through a series of levels that scroll to the side. Players have access to a wide variety of weapons and abilities with which they can dispose of foes, such as hidden blades, smoke bombs, and rope darts, amongst others. The games also include elements of stealth, giving players the ability to sneak up on enemies or disguise themselves among crowds in order to avoid being discovered.
